A prominent businessman on the border town of Katuna in south western Uganda has been arrested by security officials from Rwanda, in the town of Gatuna right across the border.
Denis Karyamarwaki, also known as Doctor, who runs a money changing company at the border of Katuna was arrested on Thursday by security officials on the Rwandan side.
Nelson Nshangabasheija, the Katuna town council mayor confirmed the arrest.
The family of the businessman after getting information of the arrest, went to Gatuna Police in the Northern Province Gicumbi District to try to secure his release.
Nshangabasheija says traders and relatives are worried that Karyamarwaki might be harmed.
He called on the central government in Kampala to pick up the matter.
Phiona Ainembabazi, the daughter of the businessman says her father was arrested when he went to rescue one of his colleagues, one Gilbert Switzen who had been detained by the Rwandan Police in Gatuna where he had gone to exchange 6 million Francs into US Dollars.
She says this morning the family traveled to Gatuna and took breakfast to the detainee and were allowed to see him, but when they returned in the afternoon with lunch, they were denied access.
“As of Friday afternoon when we went back taking him lunch they denied us to see him. We later saw him being placed on a motor vehicle and driven toward Kigali,” she said.
“We are asking the government of Uganda to intervene and have our father freed.”
Rwandan Police were yet to speak out on the arrest and what charges are being preferred on the businessman
