Authorities in the south western Kigezi region have arrested and detained a local tour operator who is accused of helping a Rwandan national to obtain Ugandan legal documents.
The suspect, Denis Tukamushaba alias Chicharito is a tour operator and owner of Eagle Tours and Travel Company.
He was arrested yesterday by men who claimed to be from Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI).
Counsel Bruno Kukundakwe Bitwenda of Bitwenda and Company Advocates says his client Tukamushaba called him up in panic on Tuesday afternoon after receiving phone calls summoning him to Kabale Police Station.
He says both of them went to the police station and met the Kigezi Region Deputy Police Commander Dan Byaruhanga to inquire on the matter.
The DPC told them that Tukamushaba was wanted on accusations of helping a female Rwandan national only identified as Josian to forge and illegally obtain a Ugandan national identity card.
Tukamushaba denied the allegations.
Immediately, the lawyer says, three men who were dressed in casual clothes and claimed to be from CMI dragged his client in a car and drove off on Kisoro road.
He says upon further inquiry; he was informed that Tukamushaba was being taken for questioning at Kisoro Police Station where his supposed co-accused Josian was also being detained.
The lawyer condemned the manner in which his client was arrested and added that they were doing everything possible to have him released.
When contacted about the matter, the Kigezi region deputy police commander Dan Byaruhanga said he would give an official communication about the matter later.
