Makindye Chief Magistrates Court has ordered the release of two Nigerian artistes who were arrested for flouting Covid 19 guidelines.
The artistes Stanley Omah Didia alias Omah Lay and Temilade Openyi alias Tems were remanded yesterday to Kitalya Prison after they were charged with committing a negligent act likely to cause the spread of Covid19.
These allegedly held a big rally over the weekend in Kampala, yet such events remain banned.
The unauthorised concert was held on Saturday night in Ddungu Resort in Munyonyo.
Their arrest sparked global outrage with strong condemnation against Uganda Police which was accused of allowing the illegal event to happen in the first place.
The campaign for their release which was pushed by fellow musicians back at home was joined by artists in Uganda.
Amid the growing pressure, the DPP has since decided to drop all the charges against the suspects.
As such, Magustarte Jude Okumu Muwone ordered Prison Authorities to release both singers unless there are other charges against them.
It should be noted that Court yesterday declined to release the suspects on bail because they failed to meet all conditions.
Police also stated that the earlier plans of releasing them on police bond, were suspended after their casefile was sanctioned by the Office of the DPP.
