Uganda’s finest Joshua Cheptegei has broken the 5000m World record during the Herculis EBS meeting in the Wanda Diamond League in Monaco, France.
Cheptegei posted a timing of 12:35.36 to set a new world record surpassing a long standing record of 12:37.35 set by Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele in 2004 in Hengelo.
Kenya’s Nicholas Kimeli and Jacob Krop finished in the second and third positions with 12:51.78 and 13:11.32 respectively.
Cheptegei has now broken the second world record in the year 2020 having set a new world record of 12:51 during the 5km run in Monaco.
Prior to Championship on Friday night, he had his personal best in the 5000m standing at 12:57.41 which had he achieved last August in Zurich, Switzerland.
