Peter Otai a journalist working with Uganda Broadcasting Cooperation together with members of the Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) have dragged to court Ugandan Ambassador to Burundi Rtd. General Matayo Kyaligonza and his two body guards who they accuse of assaulting the UBC employee.
Otai, who also works as a Manager at Magic Radio under UBC says on February 24, he was physically and verbally assaulted by Gen Kyaligonza with his body guards in Mukono as he filmed a clash between them and a female traffic police officer.
In the application filed this morning at High Court, Otai wants General Kyaligonza, his body guards Corporal Bushindiki Peter, Private Okurut Robert to pay him Shs 340 million as damages for their actions.
“In order to promote press freedom, good governance and accountability and rule of law it is just and convenient for court to allow this application and grant all the reliefs sought,” reads part of the suit.
The applicants add that if court doesn’t check on the excesses by security operatives, many journalists face a risk of losing their jobs and careers at the hands of those who are supposed to protect them
