10 polling officials who were involved in organisation of the recently concluded Jinja Municipality East by-elections are currently in a holding cell over voter registration malpractice.
Police says that the arrested individuals are said to have legally added names in the registration Database.
Kira Regional Police Commander (RPC) SP Onesmus Mwesigwa, who was speaking to media on Monday, quoting the Electoral Commission Act Section 29 (F) and (E) — said that the polling officials have been charged for “procuring registration of other persons not entitled to be on the register.”
Jinja Municipal Council Speaker Morrison Bizitu is also among the detained officials, according to the RPC.
SP Mwesiga says that police has enough evidence that the arrested officials were involved in the illegal transfer of names.
He, however, refused to state who the complainant in this matter is, stating that it will affect police investigations.
The district Returning officer, Rogers Sserunjogi denied knowing anything about the arrest of his colleagues in a phone interview.
It should be recalled that a few days to the voting day for the Jinja by-election, FDC candidate Paul Mwiru organized a press conference where he stated that there were some unknown names on the Jinja east register.
The electoral commission later issued a statement dismissing the allegation.
Paul Mwiru won the election to become the member of parliament for the constituency with 6654 votes and his opponent Igeme Nabeta got 5034 votes.
