NRM Chairman for Jinja municipality Julius Zziwa has withdrawn from Jinja East constituency Member of Parliament (MP) by-elections to support the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate Paul Mwiru.
In the polls, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) is represented by Nathan Igeme Nabeta, who was recently thrown out of parliament by the Court of Appeal because of election malpractice.
The turn of events comes after a Thursday delegates’ meeting that was held at Civil Service College in Jinja municipality chaired by President Yoweri Museveni, who is also chairman of the NRM Party.
Speaking to newsmen on Friday, Zziwa wondered why he was not invited for the meeting, yet he is among the top NRM leaders in Jinja.
He, however, suspected it could have been because he had shown interest in contesting for the seat.
“I did not get the invitation to a meeting I was supposed to attend because I had already got the nomination form,” said Zziwa.
Basing on that, the agitated Zziwa said he was going to work tooth and nail to ensure that Nabeta doesn’t get any votes in “my village” and “I am going to rally support for Mwiru (FDC).”
“I am going to start looking for Mwiru’s vote as my candidate,” he said.
He, however, said that he is still a supporter of President Museveni.
Phillip Obanda, the NRM youth chairperson also told reporters that he was not going to support Nabeta in the forthcoming elections: “I can no longer support Igeme Nabeta and let us see who will be the loser and the winner.”
