President of the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) Gabriela Cuevas Barron, who also doubles as chairperson of Mexico’s Foreign Relations Committee is set to visit Uganda next week on January 24th 2020.
According to Speaker Rebecca Kadaga, Gabriela will be in the country for the celebrations to mark 130 years of IPU.
“So we expect our president of the Inter Parliamentary Union to be here as part of that celebration,” Kadaga announced.
Gabriela whose vast experience in Mexican politics spans two decades was first involved in politics at the age of 15 when she joined the National Action Party (PAN), an opposition party with close ties to the Roman Catholic Church.
She was elected the 29th president of IPU on October 29th 2017.
Meanwhile, Kadaga took time to announce the next parliamentary week which commences Monday next week under the theme “Building a strong democracy in Uganda”.
She called upon members of the public to utilize this opportunity to acquaint themselves on how the legislative arm functions.
“Talk to the staff, ask questions and generally relate with the institution,” she said.
The opening day shall see legislators participate in a charity walk to raise funds for the Albino Community of Uganda. This is part of their corporate social responsibility campaign that has seen them plant trees in Tepeth County in Moroto district last year and different parts of the country.
