As the 2021 general elections draw closer amidst the threat of the Covid-19 pandemic, National Resistance Movement (NRM) mobilizers have innovated a number of techniques to ensure that they defeat other political parties countrywide with a higher margin than before.
These, under their Association ‘Team Thorough YKM’, revealed that there has been a slight decline in the number of votes got by various NRM candidates on various positions as per the 2016 polls compared to previous elections.
Addressing the press in Kampala, Eng Kiiza Idiri Kamuntu, the National Coordinator of the team, disclosed that they have conducted a study in which they have discovered the cause of the slight decline in their winning percentage from the past two presidential elections of 2011 and 2016.
“We are going to table our research findings to the NRM chairman, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who assigned us the duty and we hope these findings are going to help us defeat opposition with a higher margin than before,” Kamuntu said.
Among the reasons pointed out in the report for the decline in number of votes gained by NRM candidates, Kamuntu noted, are the ‘demoralized’ members who talk ill of their own party.
“We have been able to meet a number of them. Majority of these have been complaining of unfulfilled pledges from the president but working with relevant authorities, many have got their pledges fulfilled and other pledges are still in the pipeline,” Kamuntu added.
Kamuntu pointed out that there has been lack of a specialized team to counter opposition propaganda with factual information about Government’s achievement but they have already instituted it.
“We are going to ensure that we show people the achievements of this government in all sectors. If anybody talks about what government has failed to implement, let him also bring about the achievements registered so far,” he stated.
He pointed that the other reason was that most of the NRM members don’t want to turn up for voting with a hope that they have already won elections which greatly affects their percentage.
The report has also shown that the issue of independent candidates who shun the party after being defeated in the party primaries also led to reduction in votes by NRM candidates, which in turn led to the success of some opposition candidates on various elective offices.
On this issue, Kamuntu said they have agreed with all aspirants not to stand independently in case they are defeated in party primaries.
This Association, which consists of over five million people, through its grass-root mobilization, has reportedly been able to receive over 20,000 defectors from numerous opposition parties.
NRM Thorough was founded by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on November 15, 2015 with the First Lady Hon Janet Kataha Museveni as its patron.
