Police has Monday revealed the identity of the men toting fake guns and donning NRM party T-shirts whose pictures have been making rounds on social media.
According to the law enforcement body, five men were arrested and are currently under detention at Iganga Central Police station.
Addressing a security press briefing in Kampala, Police spokesperson CP Fred Enanga identified the men as Thomas Mwiru who was the team leader, Sejja Robert, Sentamu Zubair, Kaluya Robert and Abdallah Kakoba.
Although they were detained for toting fake guns, Enanga pointed out that they are also facing charges of doing negligent acts such as organizing an illegal procession which is most likely to cause the spread of an infectious disease in this case Covid-19.
A total of three imitation guns were impounded and according to the spokesperson, an assessment on them has been done and found that they were not harmful.
“So as the normal procedure, we have completed their files and forwarded them to the Resident State Attorney for perusal,” said Enanga.
He condemned and discouraged the acts done by the suspects and warned politicians to reign on their supporters not to engage in acts that violate the law.
Police, however, did not reveal which NRM candidate the suspects were escorting.
