The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and European Union are set to hold a two day conference on conflict mediation, peer-to- peer experience and knowledge sharing in Kampala.
The Mediation Support Units (MSU) of the two regional and continental bodies, which have already signed several cooperation agreements, are expected to convene at Sheraton Hotel Kampala between January 24th 2019 and January 25th 2019.
According to a statement released on Monday, the event is aimed at tapping into the wealth of experience and consideration of the acumens between the IGAD and EU envoys involved in various conflict mediations.
“The objective is to provide a space for reflection on insights of the IGAD and EU regions as well sharing of recent mediation processes by the respective Special Envoys and Mediators to learn and share from the diverse nature of conflicts settings, experiences and changing environments represented in these experiences in order to examine roles of mediation support mechanism of IGAD in context of other institutions namely the EU and UN,” said part of the statement.
The conference is also expected to create a mutual learning environment to enrich existing talent, knowledge and experience on conflict prevention, dialogue and mediation between the skilled and internationally exposed mediators, highlight international best practices.
The Danish Kingdom supported occasion has multiple themes including; the nexus between early warning and mediation intervention; mediation from design to exit; employment of dialogue in conflict mediation; navigating geo-politics context in mediation; promoting national ownership of peacemaking interventions and lessons learnt in international mediations.
The IGAD mediators, who have already handled situations in South Sudan, Somalia and Kenya, are projected to gain new skills on international mediation operations; shared regional context, experiences with EU and UN on mediation support teams; strengthened understanding of MS/IGAD ambassadors on the role of mediation support entities in mediation processes.
The IGAD Special Envoys to South Sudan and Somalia, EU Special Envoys to various processes, IGAD Roster of Mediators, Ambassadors of IGAD Member States members of the IGAD Ambassadors, members of Pan Wise, EU representatives, ACCORD and United Nations are expected to participate in the Kampala event.
