Youths in Ibanda district under their organization Ibanda Youth Initiative for Sustainable Development (YISD) yesterday staged a peaceful demonstration over what they called misallocation of the funds given to them by President Yoweri Museveni.
Dozens of youths led by one Innocent Mbabazi matched from their office on Jubilee Street to the office of the RDC Mr. Eliasto Akatuheebwa, seeking his intervention.
Mbabazi says President Yoweri Museveni during his visit to the district in May, donated Shs 50Million to the youth group.
The Money, Mbabazi says, was handed to the Ibanda district woman MP Hon Jovrine Kaliisa.
While the money was lobbied by the youth group (YISD), Mbabazi says the MP instead took it and handed it to another group named Ibanda Young Entrepreneurs Sacco (IYESA), which was formed in August, three months after the president’s visit.
The youths threatened to travel to State House and present their grievances to the President.
In response to the protesters, RDC Akatuheebwa promised to talk to the Member of Parliament Jovrine Kaliisa.
When contacted to comment on the impasse however, Hon Kariisa accused her fellow MP John Byabagambi (Ibanda North) his brother Melcheades Kajwengye (who is the district LC5 chairman) and the RDC Akatuhweebwa of fueling the conflict.
Mrs Kaliisa told us the youth group (YISD) was feeling emboldened by Hon Byabagambi, who is its patron, as well as the RDC who serves as its senior advisor.
Kariisa told us on phone the money for which the group is fighting, was lobbied` by herself from the President.
“I am the one who invited the President to Ibanda. He gave us the 50million for the youths, another 50Million for the women of the district, and some 400bags of cement for my school,” she said.
The MP said President Museveni did not allocate the money to YISD but to all youths of Ibanda.
As such, she says, when the money arrived, she led the efforts to form a universal SACCO for the entire district, (IYESA) where all youths of Ibanda could join in and get funds for their projects.
The new group, she said, is led by elected district youth leaders, from all sub counties of the district, who are more accountable. At least 500 members, she said have already joined the group.
“If they (YISD), went there (to IYESA) and were denied the funds, their complaints would be understandable,” the MP emphasized.
Chimpreports understands, the RDC Mr Akatuheebwa has since written to Hon Kaliisa asking her to have the 50million split between the two groups.
Asked whether she would be heeding to this call, the MP told us, “I don’t take directives from the RDC.”
