“I Want to be in Luzira” – Stella Nyanzi Rejects Bail

Makerere University academic, Dr Stella Nyanzi was Friday afternoon formally charged with two counts of   cyber harassment and offensive communication, in which the prosecution claims she had an intention of disturbing the peace of President Yoweri Museveni.

The state alleges that Nyanzi posted obscene messages on her official Facebook page while attacking the privacy of the President and that of his late mother, Esteri Kokundeka.

The Makerere don, known for her potty mouth, is said to have posted on her Facebook wall on September 16th, wishing that the late Kokundeka’s “cursed vaginal canal had burnt up the president’s unborn foetus.”

Dr Nyanzi denied these charges read against her; but added that if her Facebook post was deemed to be an offence, she was ready for hearing of the case.

“I am a writer who has criticized the regime through various writings; those writings represent a number of suffering Ugandans,” she said, adding however, that the particular Facebook post was not offensive to anyone.

“If the President says that I offended him, I would like him to come to court and show me my guilt face to face than through these trumped up charges,” she retorted.

After taking plea on these charges, Nyanzi was informed that her offences are bailable and that she has the right through her lawyer Isaac Ssemakadde to apply for bail.

Nyanzi however, turned the offer down, informing court that she was not interested in bail, but an expeditious trial.

“I am not interested in bail,” Nyanzi said. “I will stay in Luzira and teach those ladies how to write on Facebook,”

The magistrate ordered the prosecution to disclose to the prosecution all evidence to the defence and adjourned the matter for further mention.

Nyanzi was remanded back to Luzira prison.
