Hundreds of people on Sunday turned up at Kabale Municipal stadium for the Save Lake Bunyonyi Marathon that was organized by the Kigezi Tourism Cluster.
The marathon which attracted over 500 participants that completed 21km, 10km and 5km stretches, was sponsored by MTN Uganda.
The first Kigezi tourism marathon was aimed at raising funds to conserve the environment around lake Bunyonyi, and was graced by number of prominent Ugandans that include Parity Twinomujuni the chief executive officer of the National Housing and Construction Company (NHCC) , Norman Batuma the managing director Chims telecom ,Kenneth Jogo Biryabarema the Rubanda LC5 chairman among others.
Eng. Canon Ivan Mbabazi Batuma the chairperson Kigezi Tourism Cluster said the collected money shall help in constructing toilets in schools around Lake Bunyonyi, planting trees and sensitizing the neighbourhood communities on the need to conserve the lake.
He noted that over the years, locals have been throwing fecal material into the lake, that serves the whole of Kabale.
Eng. Batuma says that a total of 45 million shillings was raised during the first Kigezi Tourism Cluster Marathon.
Dr Ruhakana Rugunda the Prime Minister in his message read for him by Biryabarema, said that Lake Bunyonyi is endangered to extinction due to the bad farming methods.
This he said has contributed to the lake rapidly losing its depth.
Dr Rugunda applauded the good work that is being taken up by the Kigezi tourism cluster and asked the hoteliers along Lake Bunyonyi also to protect the environment and stop throwing litter into the lake.
