Ugandan human rights lawyer Nicholas Opiyo has reportedly been arrested by security.
Opiyo is said to have been arrested from Kamwokya in Kampala and driven to an unknown destination.
Grounds for the arrest were yet to be established as security agencies had not yet commented on the matter.
However, his family members were quoted by media, confirming the arrest. These also revealed that they believed Opiyo was arrested by officers from the Chieftaincy of the Military Intelligence.
National Unity Platform Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Bobi Wine claimed Opioyo was arrested because he was looking into the aftermath of the November 18th protests in which over 50 people were killed.
The protests were sparked by the arrest of the candidate.
Bobi Wine said Opioyo was “abducted by security from restaurant in Kamwokya, alongside other lawyers investigating murders of 18th & 19th, Nov. Thrown into private van with tinted glasses and driven at breakneck speed to unknown destination.”
Police spokespersons had not response to our requests for comments.
