How To Reduce Power Wastage At Home

Our energy bills can sometimes be too high, but lowering them doesn’t require spending money on green power gadgets or sacrificing your sanity. With a few simple tricks and minor adjustments to the way you operate your appliances, you can drive your energy costs down.

 Turn off all electric appliances while you go to sleep

So many people leave appliances plugged in which is power consuming; endeavor to turn off everything including the extension cables. Use smart power strips. A smart power strip prevents electronics from wasting electricity when you are not using electric appliances by turning them completely off when they go in standby mode.

Kimbowa says that a big percent of the energy used by home electronics is consumed when they are turned off.  These include televisions, DVD players, stereos, computers and many kitchen appliances.

Replace old electric appliances

Those who have old electric appliances should consider replacing them. In most cases, old electric appliances consume more electricity as compared to new ones. If your appliances are 15 years old or more, consider replacing them with new models which are considerably less energy consuming.

Use energy resourceful lighting

Peter Kimbowa, an electric dealer in kiyembe says that you should look out for energy saving bulbs. LED light bulbs use 90 percent less energy than glowing bulbs while compact luminous bulbs are a bit costly, but have a longer lifespan and use less energy. He says in instances where some dimmed lights can do, you can replace your overly bright bulbs with those which are a bit deeming just for purposes of cutting costs.


Adjust your water heater

If you have water heaters, it is advisable to turn down the temperatures in case no one is using it. And in case you are in an apartment that has an in built water heater, consider turning the temperature down while everyone is away so that it is not heating. A water heater jacket may also reduce heating costs.

Install low flow shower heads

Low flow shower heads reduce electricity consumption since the very first ones require a lot of pressure which end up consuming a lot of energy.  You can always request your plumber to consider fixing low flow shower heads before they fix the showers in the bathroom.

Keep your fridge and freezer full

Did you know that keeping your fridge and freezer full can also save money?  The food is said to act as insulation which lessens the amount of time that the fridge has to run to stay cool. in the end, this helps to save the amount of electricity used. It is also not advisable to put uncovered foods in the refrigerator as condensation makes the refrigerator work harder hence consuming more power.

Clean your refrigerator coils

Refrigerator has dirty condenser coils; it has to work harder to cool your foods.  It is important to perform maintenance on your refrigerator once in a while to optimize its efficiency and also as a way of cutting electricity bills.
