According to the deputy spokesperson Polly Namaye, the accident occurred when the driver of a speeding Toyota Noah UAS 567C unsuccessfully tried to overtake three vehicles including two taxis and a trailer.
“As the reckless driver tried to overtake the three vehicles, he had a head on collision with the trailer, swerved off the road before overturning and falling on top of the taxi UAX 718N,” Namaye told ChimpReports.
“Most of those who died were in the taxi.”
She noted that the other vehicles involved in the accident were taxi registration number UAN 443P and the trailer registered as KBN 290X/ZD 598B.
According to the Katonga Region police spokesperson Philip Mukasa, by Saturday night, 17 people had died adding that the number has however increased to 19 after two more succumbed to injuries sustained in the accident.
He added that among the dead are five females and 14 males stressing that few of these have been properly identified.
“We have only identified Juma Ssenfuka, the driver of the taxi registration number UAX 718N that was plying the Kayabwe-Kampala route. We have had problems identifying most of the deceased because most of them didn’t have identification documents, ” Mukasa said.
He said survivors were rushed to Mulago and Gombe hospitals.
Namaye attributed the accident to overspeeding and reckless driving by the driver of the Toyota Noah.
