The construction of Uganda’s second national stadium in Hoima City is progressing ahead of schedule, with Turkish firm SUMMA spearheading the $129 million project poised to transform the region’s sporting landscape.
This state-of-the-art, multi-purpose facility is earmarked as a key venue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and its rapid progress underscores Uganda’s commitment to developing world-class sports infrastructure.
According to Project Manager Murat Altun, the main 20,000-seat outdoor stadium is already over 70% complete. Roofing, electrical wiring, advertising boards, and seat installations are currently underway and expected to be finalized by the end of July.
“The stadium is now at an advanced stage,” Murat said. “We are working day and night to ensure it is ready for handover to the Ministry of Sports by December this year.”
Construction, which began in September 2024, has been accelerated by a dedicated workforce of over 1,000 workers operating in shifts around the clock.
Beyond the main stadium, the complex will feature a 2,000-capacity indoor arena, an auxiliary football pitch, a semi-Olympic swimming pool, a running track, and outdoor courts for basketball and netball—making it a true hub for multi-sport development.
Altun further confirmed that the auxiliary facilities, including the indoor arena and swimming pool, will also be completed before the December 2025 deadline.
Situated in Mparo Division, Hoima City, within the Bunyoro sub-region, the stadium occupies 34.9 acres (14.1 hectares). Of this, 10 acres were donated by the estate of the late Dr. Rujumba, with an additional 10 acres sold to the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) by the same estate. The remaining 14.9 acres were acquired by the Uganda National Council of Sports.
Primarily designed for football, Hoima Sports Stadium will also accommodate athletics and other sports, positioning it as a versatile venue for national and international events.
As Uganda prepares to co-host AFCON 2027 alongside Kenya and Tanzania, the timely completion of Hoima Stadium will be a major milestone, enhancing the country’s sporting credentials while boosting economic growth and tourism in the region.
