Higher Education Loans Should Go to Poor Students – Prof Kagonyera

Former Makerere University Chancellor Prof. George Mondo Kagonyera has urged Government to redirect loans and other support given to academically bright students to those who are incapable of affording fees because many well performing students are only taught to pass exams.

Kagonyera was speaking as a Chief guest at the 21st graduation ceremony of Ndejje University in Luweero district.

“I am glad the gentleman in charge of loans is here, my view has always been and is that the support which Government gives to students should be redirected largely to those students who are incapable of affording their fees.

“As we all know, the Government gives scholarships to those persons who have 4As and 3As,” he said.

According to Kagonyera, Government has not realized that students in most first class secondary schools are trained to pass exams and these are the ones government supports.

“What is just in such a system? In fact, this country’s education system has unnecessarily overstressed passing exams. That is why some young men and women even pay their teachers to get free grades. In that effect, they are paying to remain ignorant. And if you go with that ignorance young men and women, where will that ignorance take you in life?” he asked

Kagonyera further called on Government to think about supporting private Universities especially those he termed as “nonprofit making institutions” because they are doing the job of government.
