Police and the military have deployed heavily in Isingiro District as NRM holds repeat elections in 26 villages of Bukanga constituency and 17 villages in Isingiro South constituency today.
Mr Samson Kasasira, Rwizi Region Police spokesperson, said the deployment is meant to deter nay acts of violence that characterised the September 4 primaries in the area.
“Those intending to disrupt the exercise will be arrested because we have deployed enough manpower,” he said.
Maj. Charles Kabona, the UPDF Second Division spokesperson, added, “We are beefing up our sister security forces in ensuring there is peace and tranquility during this exercise. We have been analyzing situations, there are opportunists who disrupt peace during these elections. We have to ensure peace and tranquility before, during and after elections.”
Ms Rhona Kukundakwe, the district NRM party registrar, said candidates have been warned against malpractice that characterised the previous election.
“We cancelled the exercise in these areas after violence erupted over non -residents who have been ferried to take part in elections.
This time we have warned candidates against this malpractice but we also asked for enough deployment to see the exercise is not disrupted,” Ms Kukundakwe said.
In Bukanga incumbent Mr Stephen Kangwagye is competing with Dr Moses Mpeirwe, Mr Alpha Kamoga and Mr Abel Tumusiime.
In Isingiro South the incumbent Mr Alex Bakunda is being challenged by Mr Allan Atukwasa Mateka, Mr Asaph Atuheirwe, Mr Gilbert Rwabanbari, Mr Vicent Semukasa and Mr John Tumwine.
