A 28-year-old man in Gulu was Friday morning hit and severely injured by an explosive that has been lying in his garden.

Fred Ojok, a resident of Wilul Village in Paicho sub-county, Gulu district was reportedly tilling his garden when he knocked the device that exploded and injured him.

Major Caesar Olweny, the spokesman of 4th army Division in Gulu confirmed this incident, adding that the army was immediately alerted on the incident.

The UPDF, Uganda Police and officers from the United Nations rushed to the scene and took the victim first to Cwero Health Center III and later to St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor where he is currently receiving treatment.

Maj Olwey warned the residents that such unexploded devices are still scattered in the community since the LRA insurgency.

He advised the community not to tamper with anything that they find suspicious, but rather put a mark around it and alert authorities immediately.

A team of UPDF/Uganda Police Anti-mines have in the past been working to remove the unexploded ordinances.
