Police in Gulu are investigating a case of aggravated defilement reported against Gulu district speaker, Mr. John Okwonga.
The speaker is said to have sexually assaulted a 14-year-old minor.
The case was reported on May 30th under file number CRB762/2019 at Gulu Central Police station by a relative of the victim.
Aswa regional Police spokesman, Jimmy Patrick Okema told us the suspect, Mr Okwonga was briefly detained and released on Police bond after recording a statement at the station.
Mr. Okema says the suspect is alleged to have defiled the minor in March of this year from his residence in Laroo Division in Gulu Municipality.
According to the police mouthpiece, the case has been referred to the Resident State Attorney to determine the next course of action.
While speaking to reporters at his office, the suspect Mr. Okwonga confirmed that he recorded a statement at the Police concerning the incident.
He however declined to comment further on the charges, since it’s under investigation.
Mr. Okwonga is the District Councilor representing the people of Onyama Sub-county in the 10th Council at Gulu district.
Under Penal code act of Uganda, aggravated defilement carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
A Crime report released by Uganda Police shows that there were 1580 cases of rape reported in 2018 compared to 1, 335 cases reported in 2017.
