Ugandan security forces are hunting down unknown gunmen who robbed City Supermarket in Mpererwe after killing a private security guard on duty on Saturday night.
The deceased has been identified as Wilson Okot.
According to a police statement released on Sunday, the six men who also had a pistol stormed the supermarket located in Kawempe Division at around 9:00pm before shooting the security guard attached to Tight Security.
“Yesterday at around 2120 hours in Mpererwe, it’s alleged that 6 thugs armed with an SMG and another with a pistol traveling on three weeks numberless motorcycles attacked City super market, shot and injured Wilson Okot who tried to confront them,” readspart of the statement.
The attackers later forced their way into the supermarket, put everyone on gunpoint and robbed unspecified amounts of cash.
The daring gangsters after the robbery reportedly attacked a mobile money agent who works just next to the supermarket before robbing Shs 4.5m.
Police said detectives and patrol vehicles were swiftly deployed to apprehend the dangerously armed thugs.
“The 999 and CID later responded 15 minutes after receiving the call about the two incidents with 3 patrol vehicles and are actively still pursuing any leads to the arrest of these suspects,” said police.
Police praised the late private security guard for confronting the thugs.
“Unfortunately Okot who had bravely confronted these six thugs was announced dead on arrival to Mulago hospital. He died because of the wounds he had gotten from the two gun shots,” said Police.
Cases of armed robbery have increased in recent months.
A city bank was recently raided by thugs who also stole money.
The thugs also shot at car which tried to block them, injuring a female adult as they escape from the scene.
