Gov’t Suspends All International Conferences Over Coronavirus

In a bid to contain the spread of COVID-19 disease caused by Coronavirus, the Government has announced that all International conferences and meetings slated to take place in Uganda have been halted.

The pronouncement was made by the Minister of Health Dr Jane Ruth Aceng at Ministry headquarters in Kampala today afternoon.

“The Ministry of Health would like to inform the general public that all International conferences slated to take place in Uganda have temporarily been postponed due to the looming threat of COVID 19,” said Aceng.

The decision, she said, was reached following an extensive consultation with experts from the Ministry of Health and partners such as WHO (World Health Organization), CDC (Center for Disease Control).

“The experts assessed the risk of global meetings on the importation and spread of COVID 19 in Uganda as very high.”

She added that the decision was leaned on various factors which include among others; Ugandans being vulnerable to the virus since it’s new, International conferences bringing people from countries affected by the pandemic, challenge and impossibility to avoid crowding and congestion in the big conferences and United Nations suspending a number of events over the pandemic.

“Given the above evidence, the Ministry of Health thus recommends that International meetings and conferences in Uganda should be postponed to a later date subject to the COVID 19 evolution and risk assessment.”

To the above effect, the Minister said that the last International meeting to be held in Uganda is the Uganda – Europe Business Forum taking place on Monday at Speke Resort Munyonyo.
