Mbarara Municipality MP Michael Tusiime has attributed the frequent hailstorm disasters that hit some parts of the country to negligence and environmental degradation by local communities.

Hon. Tusiime raised the concern while handing over 600 bags of rice to 1200 families of Rwakishakizi ward in Nyakayojo division, Mbarara Municipality, who were recently hit by a severe hailstorm that destroyed acres of food crops and property.

The 25kg packs of rice were sent by the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM).

While handing over the bags, Tusiime noted that many people have intentionally or ignorantly encroached on wetlands and practiced deforestation, which affects the weather cycle, leading to strong winds and other disasters.

“If we don’t stop degrading the environment, we are still facing these problems”, Tusiime said.

Speaking at the hand over, Mbarara the Deputy RDC Emmy Turyabagyenyi Kateera warned that government might soon stop providing relief aid to communities who continuously degrade the environment.

On his part, Mr. Jomo Mugabi, the chairperson Nyakayojo division warned the beneficiaries especially men not to steal the rice offered by the government from their homes, saying that its only for domestic consumption and not for sale.

He also warned the business community not to buy government rice to take it into their businesses, stressing that those caught will face the harshest response from government’s law enforcement.
