The government has given assurance to the general public that the Isimba public bridge and access roads connecting Kayunga and Kamuli districts are under construction and will be ready for commissioning by 31st December 2020.
Ministry of energy and mineral development developed the 183MW hydropower project as a national flagship project which aimed at increasing power generation in the country in order to support social economic development.
The ministry contracted China international water and electric corporation through an engineering, procurement and construction contract which was signed on 6th September 2013 to undertake project development.
The Isimba hydropower plant and transmission line components of the project were completed and commissioned by president Museveni on 21st March 2019.
The contract however provided for the construction of public access bridge/ public road on top of the dam as part of the hydropower plant to connect Kayunga and Kamuli districts as well as construction of a 3.5km access road to the site and 1.5km roads within the project site.
The road designed by the contractor on top of the dam was found unsuitable for public use because the contractor had provided only one lane instead of two as specified in the contract.
Therefore, government directed the contractor to construct a separate public bridge with two lanes as specified in the contract.
The Isimba hydropower plant and transmission line were commissioned on 21st March 2019.
Today, Dennis Katungi, the communications and media relations manager who doubles as assistant executive director of Uganda media center while reading a statement issued by the ministry of energy and mineral development to the press at Uganda media centre said that completion of the Isimba public bridge and access roads is scheduled for 31st December 2020.
“Government through Uganda national roads authority (UNRA) is supervising Isimba public bridge and access roads connecting Kayunga and Kamuli districts,” Katungi said
He added that the contractor undertook feasibility studies of separate public bridge across river downstream of the power dam which was completed in November 2018 and affirmed that UNRA cleared the contractor to proceed with the detailed design in July 2019 and construction works are ongoing.
“We want to assure the public that Isimba public bridge and access roads connecting Kayunga and Kamuli districts are under construction and will be ready for commissioning by 31st December 2020”
“Our government agency, Uganda national roads authority (UNRA) is supervising the construction of the public bridge. We are not aware of 24 billion shillings meant for the Isimba bridge that was allegedly eaten,” he added.
