Deputy government spokesperson, Col Shaban Bantariza has scoffed at the opposition People’s Government campaign to drag President Yoweri Museveni to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for purported human rights violations.
This follows talk by Kampala Lord Mayor and People’s Government vice president Erias Lukwago, who told press that they had amassed evidence detailing the role of Museveni and some of his lieutenants in the 2004 Barlonyo Massacre, the 2017 army raid on the Rwenzururu palace which killed more than 200 civilians among others.
Lukwago said staring next week they would embark on collecting 2 million signatures to accompany their petition to The Hague.
However, speaking to ChimpReports today, Bantariza laughed off this undertaking which he said was not new.
“They started on it long time ago. They have been saying they want to take Museveni, Kayihura and everybody to the ICC. Let them go who is stopping them?” he said.
Bantariza scorned this talk saying an individual entity cannot refer a case or complaint but a state entity. He therefore compared the opposition to lawyer Male Mabirizi.
According to Lukwago, says for one to sign the petition, they must be Ugandan bearing a National ID and ready to note down their identification number alongside their signature for.
“We want to tell (Fatou) Bensouda the prosecutor of the ICC that here is a petition of Ugandans bearing authentic and genuine signatures, properly executed with cogent evidence. We are going to take a truck full of evidence”
Lukwago adds that they are not dragging Museveni to the ICC as a president, but an individual.
