Government Mortuary Workers Held over Shs. 200,000 Bribe

Police in Hoima are holding two health workers attached to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary over alleged abuse of office.

John Ocan Onen, pills the facility mortuary attendant and another whose identities were still being withheld were arrested on Friday last week after they demanded for Ugx 200, case 000 in order to produce a body of a woman who had been buried near the facility.

The deceased, Juliet Kemigisa, from Fort Portal died at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital where she had been admitted for about a month.

The hospital’s efforts to trace for the relatives to claim the body did not register any success prompting them to bury the woman’s remains near the mortuary.

However, the relatives led by Godfrey Kusiima surfaced and demanded the body to be retrieved.

The two hospital staff demanded for Shs. 200,000 which the relatives paid. However, they were arrested before they had retrieved the body on the orders of Isaac Kawooya, the Hoima RDC.

Zakaliya Mbabazi, the Hoima Police OC Crime confirmed the arrests but couldn’t divulge the details.

He says the suspects will be charged for taking a bribe.
