Minister of Gender, Labor and Social Development Hon Frank Tumwebaze has Thursday rolled out the universal payment of the Social Assistance Grant – SAGE to all qualified elderly persons in the county.
Government with support from development partners, is expanding this program in all the 135 districts in the country this year.
The minister launched the payment exercise in Fort Portal in Kabarole district.
Tumwebaze revealed at the launch that the older persons this time are getting paid all their 6 months’ arrears which accumulated because of the COVID19 disruptions.
“By end of the next financial year and universal roll-out, slightly over 350,000 older persons in the country will be enrolled on to the SAGE payroll,” Tumwebaze said.
Under the SAGE Program, government is extending support to persons aged 80 years and above.
It is one of the social protection programs prioritised and pledged in the NRM manifesto of 2016
In the coming 2020/21 Financial Year, Shs 107Billion has been allocated for this cause.
