Government Hands Over Bodies to Families; Investigations Launched into Lake Victoria Boat Accident

Government has kicked off investigations into the cause of the boat accident in which dozens of people died yesterday on Lake Victoria.

Deputy Prime Minister Gen Moses Ali said government intended to get to the bottom on of the incident and also put in place measures to ensure that such accidents don’t recur in the future.

“An investigation has been instituted into the matter and a report will be released as soon as it is ready,” Gen Ali said.

“The aim is to ensure that such incidents don’t happen again the future.”

The deputy premier who represented Prime  Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, was speaking to reporters at the city mortuary at Mulago Hospital, where he officially handed over the bodies of the victims so far retrieved from the water, to their families.

A total of 30 bodies, he said, had been recovered, 15 males and 15 females.

Only 26 people are said to have survived the accident when the boat they were traveling on from KK Beach to Palm Beach capsized.

While the cause of the accident has yet to be pinpointed, eyewitnesses said the boat was taking in water and was noticed to be sinking.
