Presidential hopeful and the leader of the Alliance for National Transformation party (ANT), Maj. Gen. Mugisha Gregory Muntu has condemned the security raid at the offices of the National Unity Platform party (NUP).
On Wednesday this week, Security forces led by the Uganda Police Force, Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) and the Local Defense Unit (LDUs) raided NUP offices in an operation they said was to confiscate all clothing that are patented to be for UPDF
However, Robert Kyagulanyi, the NUP party president claimed later that in addition to the cloths, the forces also took nomination forms for NUP parliamentarians and his presidential Signatures, as well as Shs23m which has been collected to facilitate nomination fees for their parliamentary candidates.
“Some comrades have been arrested and now being held at Kira Police Station. I have also been reliably informed that so many of our people selling NUP branding materials in town are being arrested in a reckless manner,” he said.
In a statement that he released on his official social media pages, Gen Muntu reminded officers to know their duties while serving Ugandans.
“The high handedness with which security agencies handled the matter is an unfortunate continuation of the government injustices against members of the opposition. We are all too familiar with this and unfortunate but unsurprising trend,” he said adding,
“We continue to appeal to all security personnel of good conscience to remember that their duty is to serve and protect the people of Uganda, regardless of who is in office,”
He also reminded them that, “A time will come when those you will report to are those you were formerly ordered to antagonize,”
On his part, Former FDC Presidential candidate Col Dr Kizza Besigye pinned the raid on President Yoweri Museveni’s quest to stay in office.
“The attack, ransacking and forceful occupation of (Opposition) political party offices during elections is a repugnant abuse of office by the incumbent- also “sole” candidate of Uganda’s NRM/M7 Junta,” he said.
