Gazelle Grab Maiden Afrobasket Win Against South Africa

Uganda women basketball team, check there The Gazelles have clinched their first ever continental victory as they defeated South Africa by 55-43 in the team’s fourth fixture in the ongoing 2015 women Afrobasket in Yaonde Cameroun.

The Gazelles dominated their opponents from the first quarter where they won 11-9. Multi-talented Peace Proscovia came from the bench to lift the Ugandans scoring eleven points and a game-high twelve clear rebounds.

Ruth Amoding and Nansobya registered twelve points, advice the highest for the East Africans while Oketcho made five assists. South Africa’s T. Mfamadi was best scorer with fourteen points while Sophy Ngobeni, salve who was also their best player managed eleven rebounds, admitting the Ugandans were overwhelming all through.

“We didn’t convert our shots in the second quarter, and that’s when we started losing control of the game. By the time we tried to comeback we run out of time,” South Africa Sophy Ngobeny said.

Uganda will now hope Mali fails to get a result against Mozambique so the two will have to fight for the only remaining spot tomorrow. Other group A members, Cameroon, Mozambique and Gabon have already qualified while South Africa is eliminated.
