Uganda’s comedy industry has greatly grown as compared to how it was in the 1990s. Just about two decades ago, comedy in Uganda was not well received; rather well known. It was so unpopular that even the comedians that time didn’t know their audience.
During that time, fans that cared to follow comedy would only be entertained in skits; a kind of comedy known as ‘Sketch’ that involves short plays.
The notable first organized comedy group to start performing in Uganda is ‘Fun Factory’ which was popularly known as ‘Theatre Factory’ in the early 2000s.
Well, the group has now been in the business for 10 years and will be celebrating with their show dubbed ‘5 Star Madness’ happening on April 9, 2020 at Serena Hotel.
While addressing journalists at a press conference held Thursday at the National Theatre, comic Richard Tuwangye said Fan Factory has done a lot in setting up the comedy industry in Uganda.
“We are so great full for the fact that if we were not brave enough to hustle through the days comedy was not a thing in Uganda, we would not be having the industry that many people now pride in.”
The group turned 10 years earlier in January 2020, but according to Tuwangye, other members of the group had scheduled shows by that time that necessitated them to plan for a favorable date to mark their 10 years in the comedy industry.
Tuwangye said they will be doing 10 free comedy shows which will be relayed live online and after which, the audience and fans will have to download their app and subscribe to be able to watch the shows.
Asked what they have done over the years to nurture young artists who want to join and excel in comedy and theatre arts, Tuwangye said, “we groom and mentor 3 talents from Makerere school of performing arts every year.”
A one Veronica, member of the group advised the young upcoming artists to always love and give a lot of time to what they do and give it the best attention.
Fun Factory team will be traversing the Country with comedy shows in nine districts of Lira, Fort portal, Mbale, Masaka and Arua among others.
