Hundreds of Iteso converged for a fun- filled second edition of Akogo Festival that was held at UMA grounds, Lugogo in Kampala.
The highly anticipated festival attracted hundreds of cultural Music lovers not just Iteso, but other tribes as well who were seen enjoying different cultural performances at the event.
Partiers were seen flocking the venue as early as 11:00am and by Midday, one could hardly locate his or her friend as the venue was full to capacity and people were already engaged in one or two of the various activities including ‘Akogo’ dance and ‘Ajon’ drinking competions among others.
Many were seen chugged in ‘Ajon,’ a local brew well known to Iteso and beer was another option for others who were seen having many rounds of Pilsner lager, the events’ biggest sponsor.
Featuring Teso’s local cultural entertainers, the event saw several cultural groups from what we can call, the ‘finest’ who did justice to the large crowds in delivering different dances including; Ekata,Ekirakira, ajosi, ekebe,Etida and Akogo which is the event’s theme.
Akogo, known as lamellophone or thumbphone, is a local music instrument used for playing traditional music in Africa.
There were also other competitions such as Akogo dance and identifying the best Akogo player, which saw a one Jonathan Etadu awarded the best player.
The groups were later joined by perfomances from Mzee Atude, the original composer of Teso’s famous Emaali song done way back in 1962.
Akogo Festival is an annual music festival that takes place in different districts in Teso and Kampala in a bid to identify, award the best cultural performers and encourage them to promote the Teso culture though locally made musical instruments including Akogo,Adugu and Emudiri among others.
