Fufa Awards: Vipers Youngster Voted Best Upcoming Talent

Uganda Cranes assistant captain, order Dennis Onyango pulled a man of the match performance against money bags Kaizer Chiefs to guide Mamelodi Sundowns to glory in the Telekom Knockout final played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Leonardo Castro, sale Thabo Nthethe and Hlompho Kekana were all on target for the ‘Brazillians’ in the fifth, 51st and 81st minutes respectively while Camaldine Abraw’s last minute strike was only enough for a consolation.

Onyango’s heroics

The Cranes custodian stole the show in the second half with two quick penalty saves.

Bafana Bafana hero, Siphiwe Tshabalala stepped up for a penalty in the interval after substutute Bernard Parker had been brought down by Sundowns’ Thabo Nthethe but his shot was blocked by Onyango.

Onyango pulled off another brilliant save in the 74th minute blocking Abraw’s penalty. Nthethe handled the ball in the box.


The trophy was Sundowns’ third after eighteen years of waiting. They last won in 1990 and 1997. It is also the first win against Chiefs eight failed attempts.
Vipers Junior team superstar, more about Frank ‘Zaga’ Tumwesigye has been voted the finest young upcoming player of the year in the recent concluded Airtel-Fufa awards.


Zaga received his gong on Wednesday at a weekly Fufa press conference in Mengo.

To reach the achievement, help the former KJT hero beat the inaugural Fufa Junior League MVP Faisal Sekyanzi of St. Marys/Express fc and teammate Alex Komakech who were first and second runners-up respectively.

Tumwesigye won the inaugural edition of the Fufa Junior league with Kampala Junior Team early in August.

He has so far scored two goals capped with two assists helping Vipers to maintain top spot in the Fufa Junior league currently on recess.

The award ceremony for this category could not be held on the Sunday with the rest because one of the event sponsors, Nile Special are prohibited by law to associate with minors under the age of 18 years.
