Residents from three villages of Kinyaza, Kijegye and Kiborooga in Nayakayojo Division, in Mbarara Municipality have joined hands to construct their own road using their own efforts, after feeling abandoned by their leaders.
The residents say they had tried and failed to have the municipality leaders send in equipment to construct them a badly needed road.
Grace Kyokushaba, the Nyarubungo ward LC 2 Chairperson says they have on several occasions written to Mbarara Municipal council and Mbarara district officials seeking a grader to help in constructing the new road that connects the three cells; but all the requests were turned down.
This, she says is the reason the residents mobilized themselves and using hoes, pangas and other hand tools, constructed their own road.
“We wrote letters upon letters begging for a grader to construct this 5km, but we got nothing; so we decided to do this ourselves,” she said.
One of the local leaders Kenneth Umoja accused the district and local leaders of using the government issued road equipment to do their own private work.
“These people you put in office have no heart of serving people and they need to be removed,” he said.
On his part, the Mbarara district NRM Vice chairman Herbert Kamugisha who intends to stand as the Lord Mayor once Mbarara Municipality becomes a City, urged the locals to always consider the kind of leaders they vote for.
He also gave out Shs 2million to the residents who allowed the road to be built through their land.
