Former Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Apollo Kantinti, who was recently sent to Luzira civil prison over a Shs 260 million bank loan, has been committed back to jail for failure to pay another Shs 108 million to Hon Sitenda Sebalu, as costs resulting from an election petition appeal.
Kantinti was this morning brought before the Court Appeal Registrar Agnes Nkonge, who committed him back to serve another six-months if he’s unable to pay Sebalu.
” This is to authorize and require you to receive the said Hon Apollo Kantinti into your custody for a period not exceeding six months and court thereby affixes a sum of shillings 3000 per diem payable weekly” reads part of the committal order.
The 108,706,000 shillings results from the costs which the appellant court ordered Kantinti to pay to Hon Sebalu after nullifying Katinti’s election before ordering for fresh elections which brought Hon Kyagulanyi Sentamu aka Bobi Wine to Parliament
Before being taken back to Luzira, Kantinti said he was ready to serve the term because he “couldn’t pay money to somebody who robbed him his victory”
“As for the bank loan, of which I have spent 10 days in prison, I am willing to pay the money and currently we are in negotiations on how much I will pay back” Kantinti added.
The former owes up to Shs 260million to Standard Chartered Bank, which arises from a Shs 300million he borrowed from the bank in 2017, but started defaulting on payment a year later.
His political opponent and current Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi has since committed to help him clear the bank loan.
