Former Kampala Mayoral Aspirant Sentenced to 2 Years in Jail

Buganda Road chief magistrate Mariam Ayo has sentenced Muhammad Kasule, a former candidate in the NRM primaries for the post of Kampala Lord Mayor to two years in jail.

Kasule was convicted by the court on allegations that he was involved in a fake gold deal scam worth $160,000 (about 600 million shillings).

The Magistrate ruled that Kasule deserved a deterrent sentence because such offences have become rampant in Kampala.

Although Kasule had asked for a non-custodial sentence, the magistrate pointed out that its court’s discretion to decide on the sentence basing on the guiding principles.

“Although the convict said he is a   family man, and a first offender of  productive age, he  engaged in international  business where he didn’t   keep the trust vested in him; caused suffering to his victim and tarnished the country’s image abroad,” the magistrate ruled.

The magistrate also ordered Kasule to compensate the victim all the money he defrauded from him, before sending him to Luzira prison where he is going to serve his sentence.
