Five people going for a traditional marriage function on Monday drowned in Lake Kyoga after their boat capsized.
The accident occurred when the boat, carrying eight people with marriage gifts, was crossing from Akukuru Landing Site in Awelo Sub-county, Amolatar District, to Abali Landing Site in Chawente Sub-county in Kwania District.
The LC3 chairman of Awelo Sub-county, Mr Tom Okao Aweri, identified the deceased as Odongo Sam, 48, his wife Lillian, their son Luke Opio, the daughter in-law Lydia Alaba and her maid.
“Right now as I speak, the five bodies have been recovered and they are at the landing site, but the relatives of Alaba are demanding for compensation for their dead daughter because she was not yet married, but Odongo’s son had been cohabiting with her,” Mr Okao said.
The District Police Commander, Mr Samuel Abbedi confirmed the accident, warning people against travelling on overloaded boats. He said all the five bodies have been retrieved and handed over to relatives for burial.
He cautioned the public to avoid travelling on water when there is a strong wave as a result of the prevailing strong winds during this dry season.
