Police in Kisoro District have arrested five people believed to have masterminded the killing of lawyer Sendegeya Issac.
Sendegeya, who had set up his chambers in Kisoro Town, was shot dead at his gate in Nturo village, Nyakinama Sub County on Saturday night.
Mr Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for Kigezi Sub-region, identified the suspects as Sikola Nyiramajambere, Issah Mvano, Hadija Niyijena, Asuman Tito Hahumakwiha and one only identified as Mutesi, all residents of Bunagana Parish in Muramba Sub County.
According to Mr Maate, the suspects are said to have threatened the deceased lawyer’s life after losing a civil case against his client.
According to police, more suspects are still at large.
“We as Police are continuing with investigations and whoever may have had a hand in the lawyers murder will be arrested to answer charges accordingly,” Mr Maate said on Wednesday.
The President of Uganda Law Society, Mr Simon Peter Kinobe, on Tuesday expressed concern over the continued threats against lawyers in the country following the shooting dead of Sendegeya.
“The death of our member in Kisoro comes at a bad time because lawyers have been under excessive attack. We’ve seen lawyers being intimidated and threatened. As the legal fraternity, we mourn our colleague and need results from the investigations. Those who have taken to intimidating lawyers should desist from that because we’re officers of the law, our mandate is to make sure that justice is seen to be done. Members of the public and police shouldn’t see us as the enemy, we’re a vital element in society,” Mr Kinobe said.
