FIFA World Cup Update: Egypt Name 29 Man Provisional Squad

Egypt will be one of the teams that will represent Africa at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia next month.

With about a month to the biggest football extravaganza, the African giants have named a provisional squad of 29 players from which the final team will be made.

Hector Cupper the head coach for the Pharaohs revealed the squad on Monday ahead of the training camp that starts on May 22nd.

Lethal forward Mohamed Salah who has had a scintillating season with Liverpool FC leads the cast with several other notable players including Ahmed Hegazy, Mohamed Elneny , Ramadan Sobhi and Ahmed Fathi among others.

The Africa Cup record champions will have three build up games before the World Cup gets underway. These include Kuwait, Colombia and Belgium.

This will be first time in 28 years that Egypt will be playing at the World Cup. They led group E in the Africa qualifiers ahead of Uganda, Ghana and Congo Brazaville.

Egypt are in group A alongside hosts Russia, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.

Provisional squad:


Goalkeepers: Essam El-Hadary (Taawoun, Saudi Arabia), Mohamed El-Shennawi (Ahly), Sherif Ekramy (Ahly) and Mohamed Awaad (Ismaily).

Defenders: Ahmed Fathi (Ahly), Ahmed Elmohamady (Aston Villa, England), Omar Gaber (Los Angeles FC, USA), Mohamed Abdel-Shafi (Al-Fateh, KSA), Saad Samir (Ahly), Ahmed Hegazi (West Bromwich, England), Ali Gabr (West Bromwich, England), Ayman Ashraf (Ahly), Karim Hafiz (Lens, France), Amro Tarek (Orlando City, USA) and Mahmoud “El-Winsh” Hamdy (Zamalek).

Midfielders: Shikabala (Al-Raed, Saudi Arabia), Abdallah El-Said (KuPS, Finland), Mohamed Elneny (Arsenal, England), Tarek Hamed (Zamalek), Mahmoud Kahraba (Ittihad Jeddah, KSA), Mahmoud “Trezeguet” Hassan (Kasimpasa, Turkey), Ramadan Sobhi (Stoke City, England), Sam Morsy (Wigan, England), Amr Warda (Atromitos, Greece) and Mahmoud Abdel-Aziz (Zamalek).

Strikers: Mohamed Salah (Liverpool, England), Marwan Mohsen (Ahly), Ahmed Koka (Sporting Braga, Portugal) and Ahmed Gomaa (Masry).
