Uganda’s National Basketball senior men’s team, the Silverbacks have been eliminated from the ongoing FIBA World Cup qualifiers.
Rwanda has put the last nail in the team’s coffin with the third defeat in the second window of the first round.
The Silverbacks lost 92-79 in the decisive tie to neighbours. Uganda had lost 109-66 and 80-95 to Nigeria and Mali respectively.
The results see Nigeria, Mali and Rwanda progress to the second round as Uganda finish rock bottom of Group B.
Coming into the tie needing a victory to go through, Uganda lost the first quarter 25-23 before falling 18-17 in the second quarter to trail 45-43 at the long break.
Trailing by three points, the Silverbacks were surely still in the game, but the margin was extended in the third quarter as the team struggled at both ends of the court – Rwanda took the third quarter 28-17, to lead 71-57.
Going into the last quarter, the team needed more than 14 points to overturn the deficit, but it proved a hard nut to crack – Uganda won the fourth quarter 21-22, however, damage had already been caused.
Robinson Odoch who shot 8/19, scored 18 points for the Silverbacks. Jordin Mayes and John Deng Geu collected 16 and 14 respectively.
Kenny Gasana led the victors by example, scoring a game high 20 points.
In the last game of the day, Jordan Nwora hit 36 points as Nigeria rolled over Mali with a 93-53 victory.
The hosts dominated the game as they won 22-15, 25-10, 24-19 and 22-9 to seal a deserved routine win.
