FIBA 3*3 World Cup: Bittersweet End For Uganda

Uganda’s campaign in the FIBA 3*3 World Cup in China ended prematurely.

However, the invited team left a lasting impression.

On Saturday, Uganda put up a show to stun Germany with a hard fought 15-13 close victory in their first game of the day, third overall.

Later on, the team led by Jamila Nansikombi, younster Jane Asinde, Hope Akello and Rita Imanishimwe, lost to tournament hosts China 13-21.

Uganda had won Romania 17-11 and lost to Hungary 8-14 on Thurday. The team ends the round robin with a 2-2 record.

Despite the spirited fight, the Young Gazelles misses out on the Quarter Finals berth.


Germany wins Pool A followed by Hungary – the duo storm the Quarters at the expense of Romania, Uganda and China.

Argentina, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Iran and Japan are the other teams in the Women’s Quarters.

Nansikombi (Zama) leaves the tourney with 21 points, Asinde 12 points, Akello and Imanishimwe managed 11 and 9 respectively, in total.

Also, Zama finished fourth a place outside the medal bracket, in the FIBA U23 Skills contest held on the day.

Janiek van veen claimed gold for the Netherlands, Germany 3×3 rising star Theresa Simon settled for Silver and Argentina’s Agustina Garcia who beat Zama in the loser’s final took bronze.
