Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) have revealed they will not hold primaries for flag bearer for Arua Municipality parliamentary by-elections.
The seat fell vacant following the death of the area MP, Ibrahim Abiriga, who was brutally gunned down along with his brother by unknown assailants last month, on his way back home in Kirinyabigo- Kawanda in Wakiso district.
A number of people have since expressed interest to replace Abiriga, from different political parties as well as independents.
Some FDC members had started pressurizing the party authorities to organize primaries.
“We have read with concern from the media about interest from various people who want to contest on FDC ticket; the party wishes to inform the public that the FDC ticket was given to Bruce Mudathir Musema,” noted the party Deputy Spokesperson, Paul Mwiru, while addressing press in Kampala today.
Mwiru said that Musema is well positioned to win the seat, given his performance in the 2016 general elections where he garnered 7227 votes against the late Abiriga’s 8473 votes.
“I now confirm that Musema is the official party flag bearer for Arua Municipality.”
According to the road map issued by Electoral Commission (EC), nomination of candidates will be held on July 19 and 20 at Arua District Headquarters while polling will take place on August 15.
