FDC Pays Tribute To Stalwart, Bwanika Bbaale

The FDC Party is mourning the passing on of one of its strong pillar and founding leader Owek Absolome Bwanika Bbaale.

Until his death, Bwanika has been serving as the FDC Party Chairman for Luwero District branch.  He succumbed to cancer at Nakasero Hospital Kampala yesterday Afternoon.

Bwanika is a former member of the Great Buganda Kingdom Lukiiko (Parliament) representing Bulemeezi County.

In his service to the Kingdom and the Kabaka, he is remembered for playing a pivotal role in the restoration process, coronation of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi in 1993 and his contribution in the Lukiiko debates in the post coronation era  and to  Bulemeezi County.

Bwanika is one of the architects of the 1995 constitution having been elected as  a member of the Constituency Assembly representing Katikamu County North Constituency in Luweero District.

Recently during the controversial 2017 Age limit Amendment, Bwanika  had this to recount on 23rd July 2017 in the daily monitor.

“There were no submissions on the memorandum received; we did not get the memorandum about the upper age limit. Nobody proposed the upper age limit, what they proposed was term limits because this upper limit thing came after we had approved the term limits. Then by calculation, Museveni knew that Obote would by the time he completes his two years, have passed 75 years, so that article was put in very bad faith to lock out Obote, nobody else. That was introduced by the Movement to lock out the possibility of Obote coming back. It went through the caucus so when it came through the floor, everybody was in support, but it was done in bad faith.”

Bwanika joined Col.Dr. Kizza Besigye in 2000 to start the Reform Agenda that later metamorphosed  into Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

He was the Party’s Deputy Mobilization and Organisation Secretary from 2006-2015

“On my own behalf, and on behalf of the FDC National Youth League, convey our condolences to the family,  the FDC branch in Luweero, the entire National Party establishment and Buganda Kingdom which he loved so much upon the demise of a great leader,  philanthropy, role model and mentor especially to the FDC young turks. Owek has been an inspiration to the young people whenever he was invited to speak and offer capacity building to the young People of FDC. We shall dearly miss him so much,” reads part of the letter from Mulindwa Walid Lubega, the FDC National Youth League Chairman.

He added that the party is meeting with the family to agree on burial arrangements which will be communicated later.

“We pray to the Almighty God to comfort the family in this trying moment of grief and may the Lord bless and rest his soul in peace.”
