The opposition Forum for Democratic Change party (FDC) has at last welcomed Abubaker Kawalya’s victory and congratulated him upon winning the speakership of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).
FDC had fronted Makerere Councillor Doreen Nyanjura for the speakership race and ordered party members at KCCA to vote for her.
While officially unveiling Nyanjura on 17th February 2020, the FDC Secretary General Nandala Mafabi said any FDC Councillor that attempted to defy the party and stand against Nyanjura would be dismissed from the party.
However, on the date of election on 5th March 2020, the Rubaga North Councillor Abubaker Kawalya who is also an FDC card holding member stood against Nyanjura and won the seat with 17 votes, Nyanjura garnered 14 while their fellow contestant Muhammad Segirinya managed only 1 vote.
On 6th March 2020, the FDC spokesperson Ibrahim Semujju Nganda said Kawalya must apologize to the party over failure to comply with the party decision.
However, today, the FDC deputy spokesman John Kikonyogo said that the issue of Kawalya defying the position of the party was a small matter compared to the bigger goal of the party and as a result congratulated him upon winning the position.
“We congratulate Hajji Abubaker Kawalya for his elevation to that seat. As you are aware Kawalya is an FDC card holding member despite some people rushing to congratulate him more than ourselves. We are happy that he assumed that office,” said Kikonyogo.
“This is a small issue, we have to work for a bigger goal and you are even aware Mr Museveni is inviting Mbabazi’s (former Prime Minister) back to his party so FDC is going to do the same; invite all the Councillors who may have issues here and there and sit together as a party and move forward together for a bigger goal because all of us are interested in changing the status quo in the country.”
“We don’t want to see bickering in the City Council. We don’t want to be perennial and pathological bickerers in City Council,” he added.
Meanwhile, Ms Nyanjura was today appointed Executive Secretary for Finance and Administration by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.
