Police in Gulu have in custody a man identified as Stephen Okwera alias ‘Omaro-rwot for allegedly conning residents of their money.
Okwera, in his thirties, was arrested on Tuesday by plain clothed officers and taken to Gulu Central Police station.
It is alleged that the suspect has been deceiving some Church members in Gulu that he can pray for their loved ones and they get healing instantly, but at a cost.
Dickens Akena, a resident of Pece division and one of the victim says Okwera started demanding for money when he asked him to pray for his epileptic brother.
‘’My brother has a condition that drives him insane and when I shared it with this Pastor, he said I should send him money for transport since the Church is closed and Churches cannot open.’’ Said Mr. Akena.
Mr. Akena said he had so far sent him 215,000 shillings as the suspect kept calling asking for more.
He added that he later realized that ‘’Omaro-rwot’ was not a pastor but a conman who has been masquerading as Pastor from Zion Healing and Restoration Ministry.
Sam Lawino, the Resident Pastor Zion Healing and Restoration Ministry Gulu branch says the suspect has never been a Pastor at their Church but he has been moving around telling lies in their name.
‘’This Man, Omaro-rwot is not a Pastor but a conman who has deceived over 7 churches in Gulu town that he can pray for them, yet he has no power.’’ Said Pastor Lawino.
Pastor Lawino added that they don’t charge for prayers at their Church because prayer is a free gift from God.
