Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda through the State Minister for Disaster Preparedness Hon Musa Ecweru has ordered Ministry of Energy officials responsible for Geology and Seismology to immediately go to Ngora with all their equipment to find out whether or not Moru Otlikei, a rock in Ngora Town is active or not.
Local leaders last week called government to intervene amidst reports of possible volcanic eruption on the rock.
According to minister Ecweru who visited the site over the weekend, people have reported that the rock has been showing signs of possible volcanic activity.
“Locals told me that there is noise that seems to be coming from underground and then there is cracking that had never been witnessed on the rock before and that in the evening there are some fumes that look like smoke seen coming out of the rock” he said.
The minister says his people want to establish precisely what is happening, base it on the technical information and advise government on what to do next.
Bernard Eumu the LC5 Chairperson Ngora said that government should give them more information so that they can prepare their people physiologically to move.
“This parish has got about 280 households and close to ten thousand people who will all need to move if its proven that there will be a volcanic activity which is serious”.
