The Rushenyi Parliamentary seat contest has drastically taken another twist with Naome Kabasharira, her campaign chief, Nyongozi Herbert and Dr. Alex Bashasha, a long time close confidant of State Minister of Labor, Mwesigwa Rukutana, picking nomination forms for 2021 general elections.
ChimpReports has exclusively learned that Kabasharira, who was first declared the NRM flag bearer only to be nullified by the ruling party’s election chief Dr. Tanga Odoi, picked her nomination form from Electoral Commission’s office in Ntungamo district on September 21, 2020. She picked the form three days before the declaration of the results by Tanga on September 24, 2020.
“Hon. Kabasharira remains the winner of Rushenyi and she is going to be on the ballot come 2021,” said a source from Kabasharira’s camp.
Kabasharira was earlier on September 5, 2020, declared by the Ntungamo NRM district election officer, Maria Mirembe as the winner of Rushenyi with 24,006 votes against Rukutana’s 23,966 votes.
The win was, however, overturned by Tanga Odoi after a successful appeal lodged by Rukutana’s team and consequently the latter was on September 24, declared the winner with 25,310 votes (46.3%) against Kabasharira’s 25,290 votes (46.2%).
Kabasharira, now expected to stand on independent ticket, confirmed the development when contacted on phone saying her final decision will be made tomorrow Thursday, the day NRM election dispute tribunal is giving its verdict on Rushenyi poll.
“Yes, it is true I picked nomination papers just like any contending candidates. The general election process is also going on,” said Kabasharira.
Adding: “My final decision on the ticket (NRM or Independent) will be made tomorrow when the tribunal passes its verdict.”
Interestingly, Nyongozi, a top Kabasharira’s mobilizer has also joined the race on independent ticket.
Another shocker is Dr. Basasha, who has for years been a close friend and confidant of Rukutana, now ready to take away the seat from the junior minister.
