Former Miss Uganda (2003/4) Ms Aisha Salma Nassanga has promised to build a school to provide an education to street children living slum areas in Kampala.
The former beauty queen yesterday paid a visit to street children in Kisenyi, Mengo; with whom she shared her birthday cake and food.
Speaking at the event, Nassanga revealed that having been raised from Mengo slums, she was planning to use her influence to uplift the living standards of the homeless children.
“Working together with my uncle Omondi Ssali and his wife, we are in preparations of putting in place a school to provide quality education to the less privileged Ugandans because education is the key in development,” she announced.
Nassanga says her project will put much emphasis on girls because they suffer much more than the boys on the streets.
“Many of the street girls are raped and impregnated by shameless men. At the end of the day, they don’t know where to go for help.”
She also asked the government to extend her more support in her campaign of rehabilitating street kids.
Lutaaya Pascal, the Executive Director of Mengo Youth Development link said they have started resettlement plan of the street kids.
“We have started rehabilitating street children so that they can be returned to their various homes as productive citizens.”
